Absolutely. If your family is new to camping, ask before buying. Troop leaders can help you distinguish between what is required, what is optional, and what makes sense for the kinds of campouts Troop 4110 actually does.
What should we bring to a typical campout?
Bring the personal items listed in the event instructions. Typical needs include a mess kit, tent, sleeping bag, sleeping pad or cot, pillow if desired, appropriate clothing, a backpack or day bag, and any personal food or drink items you need beyond what the troop provides.
Why does everyone need a mess kit?
Troop campouts use reusable personal eating gear rather than relying on disposable plates, cups, and utensils for every meal. Each attendee is responsible for bringing and managing his or her own mess kit.
What is a mess kit?
A mess kit is the reusable eating setup each person brings to camp, typically including a plate or bowl, cup, utensils, and a way to keep or carry them together. Each scout and adult attending a campout should bring one.
What camping equipment does the troop provide?
The troop has group cooking/camp equipment and generally provides the equipment used to prepare troop meals. Families remain responsible for their personal shelter, sleeping gear, clothing, mess kits, and other items listed for the event.
Does the troop provide tents or sleeping bags?
Families are generally responsible for personal sleeping and shelter gear such as tents, sleeping bags, and pads or cots. If you are new to camping or do not have something, ask a leader before buying; we can help you work through options.

Typical personal gear includes a tent or sleeping arrangement, sleeping bag, pad or cot if desired, appropriate clothing, backpack or day bag, and a reusable mess kit. Each campout’s final packing information is provided before the event.
Does my son need camping gear before joining?
No. Do not buy a complete camping setup just to join. When a campout approaches, leaders can help you understand the required personal gear and what can be borrowed, shared, or purchased gradually.
What if we can’t afford a uniform?
Talk privately with a troop leader. Cost should not keep a boy from participating, and we will work with your family to find a solution for the required shirt.
Does Troop 4110 have used uniforms available?
Sometimes. Families often donate shirts their boys have outgrown, and the troop may have shirts available. Check with a leader before purchasing a new one.
Where can I buy Trail Life uniforms?
Official Trail Life uniform items are available through Trail Life USA’s official store/resources. Before ordering a shirt, check with Troop 4110 because we sometimes have donated shirts available.
Should I buy a uniform before our first visit?
No. Visit first and talk with a troop leader before purchasing a uniform. Your son can attend a normal first meeting in comfortable everyday clothing, and the troop may have a donated shirt in his size.
What is the Trail Life Activewear shirt?
The Activewear shirt is an official Trail Life shirt intended for more active or casual program settings. Many Troop 4110 boys have one, but it is optional unless specific event instructions say otherwise.
Does he need a Trail Life hat?
No. Many boys wear a Trail Life hat, but Troop 4110 does not require one. The official uniform shirt is the required uniform item.
Is a uniform required?
